Spa at home

Do you know those days when your shower feels like a spa retreat? Relaxing under a downpour of hot water, with aromas of body wash and hair products mingling into the steam. You close your eyes, tip your head back and let the warmth wash away tension from your scalp. That’s the feeling I aim for every time I wash my hair.

How often should you wash your hair?

If you love washing your hair, any excuse to get in the shower is welcome. On average, women wash their hair 2 or 3 times a week and this is a healthy amount.

Grit, gunk and odor can build up rapidly in certain environments. In this case, you can wash your hair more often. Frequent cleansing keeps hair clean, but use a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner to avoid stripping moisture. In addition, consider post wash products that protect and hydrate.

If your hair gets greasy every day, consider the product range you use. Products with harsh ingredients can disrupt scalp function, resulting in excess oil production. Using excess conditioner can be a problem so ease up on the amount. Does your scalp feel greasy but lengths and ends are dry? If so, try applying your product to the lengths and ends, avoiding your scalp.

What about deep conditioners?

You can use a hair mask to further maintain structure and appearance. Most hair types need the attention of a mask once a week. Dry and damaged hair should be treated more often. Most of these types of deep conditioner are applied when you wash your hair, in place of conditioner. Some can be left on overnight and you wash them off in the morning.
